Well thank you Microsoft! (with hillbilly accent)

Fox News

Microsoft’s latest Internet browser includes a piece of software that allows Internet users to hide the audit trail of websites they have visited.

The new InPrivate feature on Internet Explorer 8 — now in Beta release, and dubbed by many in the Web development community as “porn mode,” a nod to its most obvious use — when enabled automatically conceals sites visited by wiping clean browsing and search history, cookies, form data and passwords. It also clears the browser cache at the end of each session.

Once the setting is chosen, others using the same computer will not be able to see which sites have been accessed, the company said. Other browsers have similar functions, but this one is far more prominent. Although casual users cannot see the previous user’s search history, authorities such as the police will be able to access it if necessary.

My take:
Thank you microsoft for contributing to the degradation of society. Thoughts? Comments?

Only hillbillies look at porn? I don’t think so…

  2. Stephan says:

Microsoft is not first here. In Firefox you can “clear private data”. Apple’s Safari browser also has a “Private Browsing” mode.

While one obvious use is surfing for porn these modes are also useful, or necessary, when using public access computers at libraries, hotels and school computer labs.

Microsoft is just copying others. Did you really think they had an original idea? 😉

  3. No Todd, I was being sarcastic. I am well aware of the fact that revenue for pornography last year was above $97.06 billion dollars worldwide, in the US alone it was over $13.33 billion, I hardly think the hillbilly population could be the only population supporting that industry. I guess I use that accent a lot b/c I think it’s fun, no offense to my peeps in the woods. But thanks for the comment!

  5. Renee- Oh, you know me and my crafting…:-)

My favorite bit from the article: “Rival developer Mozilla said it is working to add similiar features to its Firefox browser, the New York Times reported.”
Way to go Fox! blame the NYT for your inaccuracies! As Stephan mentioned, safari and firefox have both had privacy functionality for a long time.

Privacy functionality has its benefits and its abuses, but isn’t it better to empower you, the user, than to dictate how you should and will use the program? It’s all an extension of free-will… and hopefully you make the choice for good.

  7. Thanks for the comment Jason- Yes, I got a dissertation last night on the fact that safari and firefox both have these options, I have been using this computer for over a year and never realized that. I seems absurd that someone would write a tech article on a FN website and be all “NEWS-FLASH”, and not have done their research. Hec, mine is just a hill billy blog, so I’m allowed, right?:-)
